Flashcart setup

Always download firmware from the cart maker's official source. Files from unknown places can be corrupted or malicious. Back up your SD card before applying any update.

Flashcart Setup

Once your SD card is formatted, setting up the cart itself is straightforward. The exact filenames differ between brands, but the overall flow is the same for every GBA flashcart.

Before you start

  • A microSD card already formatted to FAT32.
  • The official firmware or kernel for your specific cart.
  • A computer and a card reader.
  1. Download firmware
Grab the latest official firmware that matches your cart model exactly.
  2. Copy to card
Place the firmware files at the root of the formatted card as instructed.
  3. First boot
Insert the cart, power on the console, and wait for the cart's menu to appear.
  4. Configure
Set basics like language and default save behavior in the cart settings.

If the menu does not appear

Re-check that the card is FAT32, that the firmware sits in the right location, and that the card is seated fully in the cart. These three issues cause the vast majority of first-boot failures.

Update occasionally

Firmware updates fix compatibility and bugs. Re-run these steps when a new official release lands.
