Tools and Software

Working with the GBA, whether developing homebrew, running it, or repairing hardware, draws on a small, dependable set of tools. They are named here in plain text so you can search for the current official versions yourself.

Software

  • mGBA An accurate, actively maintained emulator used for both playing homebrew and debugging it.
  • devkitARM The standard toolchain for compiling GBA homebrew in C and assembly.
  • libgba and tonc Libraries and tutorials for reaching the hardware when writing code.
  • GBA Backup Tool Dumps and restores cartridge saves so you keep copies on a computer.

Flashcart firmware

  • EZ-Flash Omega firmware and kernel for that cart family.
  • Everdrive GBA operating system files for the Everdrive line.

Hardware tools

  • Tri-wing and Phillips screwdrivers for opening the console and battery cover.
  • Temperature-controlled soldering iron for audio, recap, and battery work.
  • Isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs for cleaning contacts and membranes.
  • Spudger or plastic pry tool for separating the shell without scratches.

Match versions to your model

Firmware and kits differ between the GBA, GBA SP, and Micro. Always confirm a tool or part is meant for your exact model before buying or flashing.
