GBA Micro

GBA Micro

The GBA Micro was Nintendo's final, smallest take on the Game Boy Advance. Internally coded OXY, it shrinks the whole console down to a pocketable slab with a tiny but remarkably sharp backlit screen and interchangeable faceplates.

Strengths

  • Beautiful screen: small, dense, and backlit from the factory, with adjustable brightness.
  • Pocket size: by far the most portable GBA model.
  • Customizable look: snap-on faceplates change the appearance instantly.

Important limitation

Unlike every other model, the GBA Micro cannot play original Game Boy or Game Boy Color cartridges. It runs GBA software only. If backward compatibility matters to you, choose a different model.

Modding the Micro

Flashcarts work in the Micro, but its compact cartridge area means you should confirm a given cart physically fits before buying, since some larger shells protrude awkwardly. The screen is already excellent, so screen kits are not part of the typical Micro project.

Collector's note

The Micro was produced in smaller numbers, so prices tend to run high. Factor that against its lack of GB and GBC support before committing.
