FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the GBA play old Game Boy games?
Yes. The original GBA and most SP models play Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges as well as GBA games, because the console includes the classic Game Boy processor. The Game Boy Micro is the exception and does not support them.
Why is my original GBA screen so dark?
The launch model uses a reflective, non-backlit screen that needs strong ambient light. It is working as designed. For a brighter picture, fit an aftermarket IPS LCD kit or use a backlit SP.
Do I need to mod the console to run homebrew?
No. Homebrew loads from a flashcart that slots into the cartridge port. The console stays unmodified; the cart holds your files.
Why does my game keep losing its save?
Most likely a dead internal battery in a battery-backed SRAM cart. Carts using FRAM, flash, or EEPROM have no battery and keep saves indefinitely.
Is emulation legal?
Emulators themselves are legal. Downloading ROMs of games you do not own is not. Stick to homebrew you may use and backups of cartridges you physically own.
My IPS screen tears. What now?
Reseat the display ribbon, and if tearing continues switch to the V2 ribbon. That fixes the symptom on most IPS installs.
Which screen model is best?
For original displays, the backlit GBA SP (AGS-101) is the favorite. For any model, an IPS upgrade gives the brightest, sharpest result.
