Safety & risks
Opening a console and disconnecting screen cables can permanently damage your hardware if done carelessly. Read this whole page before starting any physical mod, and never force a connector or panel.
Safety and Risks
Most GBA mods are safe when you go slowly, but a few mistakes are common enough to call out directly. Understanding them in advance is the best protection you have.
The fragile parts
- Ribbon cables: the thin flat cables for the screen tear easily and cannot be repaired. Lift retaining clips fully before pulling.
- Tri-wing screws: using the wrong driver strips them. Use a proper tri-wing bit.
- Plastic clips: shell halves are held by tabs that snap if pried in the wrong spot.
Electrical safety
Always remove the battery and any cartridge before opening the console. Discharge static by touching a grounded metal object first, since static can quietly kill a logic board.
Cutting risks
SP screen kits often require trimming the inner shell. Cut a little at a time, test-fit constantly, and keep debris away from the board. Removing too much plastic weakens the shell and cannot be undone.
When in doubt, stop
If a part resists, something is still attached. Re-check before applying force. A paused project is recoverable; a torn cable usually is not.
