Compatibility Notes

The GBA family is broadly compatible, but the differences between models matter when you choose a unit or plan a mod. The table below summarizes the key points by model.

ModelScreenGB/GBC cartsNotes
GBA (original)Reflective, no backlightYesRuns on two AA batteries; dim indoors; popular IPS-mod target
GBA SP (AGS-001)Front-litYesRechargeable; improved but somewhat washed-out display
GBA SP (AGS-101)BacklitYesBrightest original screen; the favored stock model
Game Boy MicroBacklitNoVery small; sharp screen; drops classic-cartridge support

Save and cartridge notes

  • Save types vary per game, not per console: battery-backed SRAM, FRAM, flash, and EEPROM all appear across GBA carts.
  • Link ports differ. The GBA and GBA SP use different connector shapes, so cables and adapters must match the model.
  • Flashcarts work in any cartridge-compatible model but must be told each game's correct save type.

Pick by priority

Want classic-cart support and brightness? The backlit SP is ideal. Want the smallest device? The Micro, accepting no GB/GBC carts. Want maximum customization? The original GBA, modded with an IPS screen.
