Cleaning

Power the console off and remove the battery before cleaning. Keep liquids away from the board, use isopropyl alcohol rather than water, and let everything dry fully before reassembly. Never scrub the screen with abrasive cloths.

Cleaning and Care

Most GBA problems blamed on hardware are really just dirt. Cartridge contacts, button membranes, and the screen all collect grime over the years, and a careful cleaning often restores a unit that seemed faulty.

  1. Surface clean. Wipe the shell and screen lens with a soft, lightly dampened microfiber cloth. Use isopropyl alcohol for sticky residue, never on the bare LCD itself.
  2. Cartridge slot. Blow out dust and clean cart contacts with a cotton swab dipped in high-percentage isopropyl alcohol. Dirty contacts cause most "cartridge not detected" errors.
  3. Buttons. If buttons feel sticky, open the shell, lift out the rubber membranes, and wipe both the pads and the board contacts.
  4. Dry and reassemble. Let alcohol evaporate completely, then put the unit back together and test every button and the cartridge slot.

Avoid the bite

Never blow into cartridges or slots with your mouth, despite the old habit. Moisture from breath speeds up contact corrosion. A can of compressed air or a soft brush is safer.

Regular light cleaning prevents the buildup that leads to dead buttons and unreliable cartridge reads, and it keeps a unit looking and feeling close to new.
