Identifying your model

Identifying Your Model

Knowing exactly which GBA you own decides every other choice you make. There are four models, and two of them look identical from the outside, so a careful check matters.

Read the label

Turn the console over. The model number is printed on the rear sticker or molded into the plastic.

  • AGB-001: the wide, tablet-shaped original with a horizontal screen.
  • AGS-001 or AGS-101: the folding clamshell SP. The label may not say which lighting it uses.
  • OXY-001: the tiny GBA Micro.

Telling the two SPs apart

Both SPs share the same shell, so use these tests:

  1. Look at the screen in a dark room. If it is dim and lit unevenly from the top, it is the front-lit AGS-001.
  2. If the image is bright and even across the whole panel, it is the backlit AGS-101.
  3. On some AGS-001 units a brightness toggle has only two steps; AGS-101 units that have the toggle modded in show a noticeably brighter maximum.

Still unsure?

The fastest confirmation is opening the unit and checking the ribbon cable, but most people can tell by brightness alone in a darkened room.
