Your shopping list depends on the project. Flashcart users need almost nothing; screen modders need a small toolkit. Here is what to gather for each path.

For a flashcart setup

• A flashcart such as the EZ-Flash Omega DE or EverDrive GBA.
• A microSD card, 8 to 32GB is plenty for the GBA library.
• A card reader and a computer to copy files.

For a screen mod

• Tri-wing screwdriver for Nintendo's security screws.
• Small Phillips screwdriver for internal screws.
• Plastic spudger or pry tool to separate panels safely.
• The screen kit itself, matched to your exact model.
• Flush cutters or a hobby knife if shell trimming is required.
• Isopropyl alcohol and a cloth to clean the lens and panel.

Nice to have

• An anti-static mat or wrist strap.
• A magnetic tray to corral tiny screws.
• Adhesive strips for mounting the new panel.
