Save management
Saves are easy to lose if a card corrupts or you reformat carelessly. Back up your save files to a computer regularly, especially before firmware updates.
Save Management
Game progress on the GBA lives in save files, and a flashcart handles these a little differently from an original cartridge. Understanding the basics keeps your progress safe.
Where saves live
On a flashcart, each game's save is written to the SD card, usually as a file sitting beside the ROM. This means your progress is portable: copy the save file to a computer and it is backed up.
Save types
- Auto-detection: modern carts identify the correct save type for most games automatically.
- Manual override: a stubborn title can be set to the right type in the cart options.
- RTC games: certain titles use a real-time clock; check that your cart supports it for full functionality.
Backing up
- Power off and remove the SD card safely.
- Copy the save files to a folder on your computer.
- Repeat periodically so a card failure never costs you a long playthrough.
Moving saves between carts
Save files are generally compatible across carts and emulators, so you can carry progress between devices by copying the matching save file.
