AGS-001 (front-lit SP)
AGS-001 (Front-Lit SP)
The AGS-001 was the first Game Boy Advance SP, the folding clamshell with a built-in rechargeable battery. It was a huge leap over the original because it finally added lighting to the screen, but it used a front-lit panel rather than a true backlight.
Understanding the front light
A front light shines across the surface of the screen rather than through it. The result is brighter than the original AGB-001 but uneven, often with a slight glare and a washed-out look. Many owners describe it as "better than nothing" rather than genuinely good.
Upgrade path
Because the front light disappoints, the AGS-001 is a frequent target for an IPS panel upgrade. A modern kit replaces the dull screen with a bright, even display.
- Shell trimming is required: the SP's interior is tight, so the inner shell must be cut to clear the new ribbon and board.
- Flashcarts work unchanged: no internal mod is needed to load games.
- Result: after the upgrade the AGS-001 rivals or beats the AGS-101.
Trimming caution
The shell trim is the trickiest part of this build. Read the shell-trimming page and cut conservatively, checking the fit as you go.
