Installing an IPS kit

This install means opening the console and handling fragile ribbon cables that cannot be repaired if torn. Remove the battery and any cartridge first, work slowly, and never force a connector or panel.

Installing an IPS Kit

Fitting an IPS kit is the most rewarding hardware mod for an older GBA, but it demands patience. The steps below describe the general flow; always follow your specific kit's documentation for exact details.

  1. Open the shell
Remove the battery, then take out the tri-wing and internal screws and separate the shell halves carefully.
  2. Remove the old screen
Release the ribbon clip and lift out the original panel without bending the board.
  3. Fit the new panel
Connect the IPS panel's ribbon, then mount it squarely behind the lens with the supplied adhesive.
  4. Route the board
Tuck the driver board and ribbon into place, trimming the shell where the kit requires.
  5. Test before closing
Reconnect power and boot to confirm a clean image before reassembling fully.

Common pitfalls

  • Dust under the lens: clean the panel and lens before final assembly.
  • Pinched ribbon: make sure no cable is trapped when the shell closes.

Test first, always

Power on before you snap the shell shut. Catching a loose connector now saves reopening everything later.
