AV Troubleshooting
Picture and sound problems on the NES usually trace back to cables, dirty connections, or an incomplete modification. Work through the simple causes before suspecting the console itself.
No picture or sound
- Confirm the television is on the correct input and that the cable is fully seated at both ends.
- Try a different cable to rule out a broken conductor.
- If the console powers on but shows nothing, the issue may be the cartridge connection rather than the AV path; reseat or clean the game.
Noisy or wavy image
A rolling or wavy picture often means a marginal cable, a ground problem, or interference from a nearby power supply. Move the power brick away from the video cable and use a shielded cable. Color shimmer on a flat panel is usually just composite limitations and improves with a proper scaler.
Audio problems after a mod
If you installed an expansion audio mod and sound is now too loud, too quiet, or distorted, the mixing resistor value is likely wrong. Revisit the balance. Buzzing that follows the picture suggests a ground loop introduced during the mod.
Isolate the variable
Test on a second display and with a second cable whenever possible. If the fault follows the console across both, the problem is internal; if it follows a cable or television, replace that instead.
For consoles with internal mods, recheck every solder joint you added before concluding the original hardware is at fault.
