What you can do

What You Can Do With an NES

The NES rewards both repair work and creative upgrades. Whether your goal is a console that simply works again or one packed with modern conveniences, here is the broad menu of projects.

Repair and restoration

  • 72-pin connector service: the headline fix for front-loaders. Clean, refurbish, or replace the worn connector that causes blinking and dead carts.
  • Cleaning contacts: game cartridge edges and console pins accumulate grime; gentle cleaning often restores reliability.
  • Power and capacitor work: aging components can be refreshed for stable operation.

Flashcarts

A flashcart such as the EverDrive N8 Pro loads ROM files from an SD card, giving you a large library in one cartridge, save states, and in-game menus. It is the single most popular NES mod.

Video and audio mods

  • NESRGB: an optional board that adds clean RGB video output for crisp, accurate color on modern displays.
  • Expansion (EXP) audio: restores the extra sound channels certain Famicom games use, enriching their soundtracks.

Match the project to the console

Not every mod fits every model. The top-loader handles flashcarts beautifully but lacks native expansion audio wiring, while the Famicom needs a 72-to-60-pin adapter for NES carts. See Choosing a method.
