RGB (NESRGB)
Installing an RGB board requires opening the console and soldering to delicate pins. If you are not confident with fine soldering, have an experienced technician do the work to avoid permanently damaging the PPU.
RGB Output with NESRGB
The NES PPU does not natively output an RGB signal, so a dedicated add-on board is used to generate one. The NESRGB board reads the digital pixel data the PPU produces and converts it into clean RGB, plus improved composite and S-Video, for the sharpest analog image the console can deliver.
- Preparation Open the console, remove the mainboard, and locate the PPU. On many boards the PPU must be desoldered so the NESRGB can sit between it and the socket.
- Mounting Place the PPU onto the NESRGB board, then install that assembly into the original PPU footprint, aligning every pin carefully.
- Wiring Run the output cable to a rear connector, commonly wired for SCART or component, and connect any control line for switching palette modes.
- Verification Reassemble enough to test, confirm a stable picture and correct colors, then close the console.
Palette options
A useful feature of the NESRGB is selectable color palettes, letting you match the look you prefer. Some installs add a switch to change palettes on the fly.
Pair with a good scaler
RGB shines when fed into a quality scaler or an RGB-capable display. Pairing the board with a strong upscaler gives the best results on modern panels.
