HDMI options

Internal HDMI kits require opening the console and connecting to several internal signals. Mistakes can damage the mainboard. If you prefer not to solder, an external upscaler is a safer no-modification alternative.

HDMI Options

Modern televisions often handle the NES analog signal poorly, so many owners want a digital HDMI output. There are two broad approaches, and the right one depends on how much you want to modify the console.

  1. Decide on the path Choose between an internal HDMI kit that lives inside the console or an external upscaler that takes the stock composite or S-Video signal.
  2. Internal install For a kit, open the console and connect the board to the required digital video, sync, and audio points, then route the HDMI port to the rear shell.
  3. External setup For an upscaler, simply connect the console's existing output to the device and the device to your television. No soldering is needed.
  4. Verification Confirm the picture fills the screen correctly, audio is in sync, and input lag is acceptable for gameplay.

Tradeoffs

Internal kits give the cleanest digital image straight from the source but require skill and permanently alter the console. External upscalers are reversible and portable across consoles, though their quality depends heavily on the source signal you feed them.

Lag awareness

Any digital conversion adds some processing delay. For fast action games, look for a solution with a documented low-latency mode so play stays responsive.
