Safety & Risks

NES work is generally beginner-friendly, but old electronics still deserve respect. Reading this page first will help you avoid the handful of mistakes that turn an easy fix into an expensive one.

Always unplug the console from mains power before opening the case. Do not rely on the power switch alone. Disconnect every cable and let the unit sit before handling internal boards.

Common risks

  • Bent pins: forcing a cartridge or mishandling the 72-pin connector can bend contacts permanently. Insert gently and keep parts aligned.
  • Stripped screws: Nintendo used security fasteners. Using the wrong bit rounds them out, so match your driver before applying force.
  • Static damage: chips can be harmed by static discharge. Work on a non-carpeted surface and ground yourself.
  • Solder injuries and damage: mods like NESRGB involve a hot iron. Burns, scorched boards, and lifted pads are all avoidable with patience and ventilation.
  • Lost saves: some cartridges hold battery-backed saves. Handle them carefully to avoid disturbing fragile solder joints.

If you smell burning, see smoke, or notice scorching, stop immediately and disconnect power. Never run a console with visible liquid damage until it has been inspected and cleaned.

None of this should scare you off. The vast majority of NES repairs are clean, simple, and reversible. Respect the basics, go slowly, and the risks stay small.
