Cleaning
Always unplug the console before cleaning. Use only appropriate cleaning agents and let everything dry fully before reconnecting power, as residual moisture can short electronics.
Cleaning and Care
Decades of dust, smoke residue, and oxidation degrade both the look and the reliability of an NES. Regular gentle cleaning keeps connections solid and the shell presentable without risking damage.
- Exterior Wipe the shell with a slightly damp cloth and a mild cleaner. Cotton swabs reach seams and the cartridge slot opening. Avoid harsh solvents that can dull the plastic.
- Cartridge slot Blow out loose dust and, if access allows, gently clean the connector contacts the cartridge mates with. On front-loaders the connector is the most common reliability culprit.
- Ports and jacks Clean controller ports and AV jacks with a swab and a small amount of contact cleaner to clear oxidation.
- Reassembly Ensure every part is dry, then reconnect and test a known-good game.
Storage habits
Keep the console covered when idle, store cartridges in a dry place, and avoid stacking heavy objects on the shell. Smoke and humidity are the worst long-term enemies of retro hardware.
Don't over-clean
Aggressive scrubbing or abrasive tools can scratch plastic and wear away delicate contact plating. Gentle and regular beats harsh and occasional.
