Save Types
NES games store progress in several different ways depending on the cartridge hardware. Understanding which method a game uses helps when preserving saves or troubleshooting lost data.
Battery-backed RAM
The classic save method uses a small static RAM chip kept alive by a coin-cell battery inside the cartridge. Games such as long role-playing adventures rely on this. When the battery dies, saves no longer persist, which is the single most common cause of lost progress on aging carts. Replacing the battery restores the ability to save but erases any existing data in the process.
Password systems
Many cartridges avoided the cost of battery RAM by giving the player a password after each level. Writing down the code lets you resume later. No battery is involved, so these games never suffer save loss, only the inconvenience of long passwords.
No save at all
A large portion of the library, especially arcade-style and early titles, offered no save mechanism. Progress lasted only until the console was powered off.
Flash carts and saves
On a flash cartridge, battery saves are written to a file on the SD card instead of a physical battery. This makes them easy to back up and immune to a dead battery, but you must exit cleanly so the file is written.
Preserving saves
If a cartridge battery is original and decades old, consider dumping the save RAM with appropriate hardware before replacing the cell, so a record survives the swap.
