Cartridge cleaning
Never blow into a cartridge with your mouth. Moisture from breath accelerates corrosion of the contacts and is the leading cause of long-term damage despite being a popular habit.
Cartridge Cleaning
A dirty edge connector is the single most common reason an NES game fails to load. The gold-plated contacts on the cartridge oxidize and pick up grime, breaking the electrical link with the console. Cleaning them restores reliable contact.
- Access Open the cartridge shell if you have the correct security bit, or clean through the opening if you prefer not to disassemble.
- Clean Dampen a cotton swab with high-purity isopropyl alcohol and wipe both rows of contacts until the swab comes away clean. Repeat with fresh swabs.
- Stubborn oxidation For heavier tarnish, a gentle pass with a soft eraser can lift it, followed by another alcohol wipe to remove residue.
- Dry and test Let the contacts dry fully, reassemble, and try the game in the console.
Why it works
Isopropyl alcohol dissolves oils and evaporates without leaving residue, making it ideal for electronics. Avoid water and avoid abrasive metal tools that scratch the plating.
Front-loader connector
If cleaning the cartridge does not help on a front-loading console, the fault may be the console's own worn connector rather than the game. That part can be cleaned or replaced separately.
