Unplug the console before opening it to inspect internal connections. If you have installed an internal video mod, recheck your own work before suspecting the original hardware.
No Video
When the console shows no picture at all, work methodically from the simplest causes outward. A complete lack of video can stem from power, cabling, the display input, the cartridge, or, less often, the console's video circuitry.
- Confirm power Check that the power light comes on. If it does not, the problem is the adapter or power path, not video.
- Check the display path Verify the television is on the correct input and try a different cable to rule out a broken conductor.
- Test the cartridge A console that powers on but shows nothing may simply be failing to read the game; clean and reseat the cartridge.
- Inspect internally If power and cabling are good and the cartridge reads on another unit, look at the console's video output components or any mod you installed.
Mod-related no video
Internal RGB, S-Video, or HDMI installs are a frequent source of sudden video loss. A single misplaced wire or cold joint can kill the signal. Review every connection added during the mod.
Swap to isolate
Trying the console on a second display and with a known-good cable quickly tells you whether the fault is in the console or somewhere downstream.
