Power supply

Use only a power supply that matches the console's required voltage, polarity, and current. An incorrect adapter can damage the console or create a fire risk. When in doubt, verify the specification printed on the console before plugging anything in.

Power Supply

The NES is powered by an external adapter that feeds the console's internal regulator. A failing adapter or a marginal connection can cause intermittent resets, a blinking power light, or a console that will not start at all.

  1. Confirm the spec Check the voltage, polarity, and current rating required by your console and match the adapter exactly. The original brick and quality replacements both work if the ratings match.
  2. Inspect the connections Examine the barrel plug and the console's power jack for looseness or oxidation. A wiggly connection causes flickering power.
  3. Test the adapter If you have a meter, confirm the adapter outputs the correct voltage under load. A weak or dead adapter produces erratic behavior.
  4. Internal regulator If the supply is good but power is still unstable, the console's onboard voltage regulator or related components may be the culprit and warrant a closer look.

Symptoms of power problems

Random resets during play, a power LED that blinks or dims, and a console that only starts after several tries all point to the power path. Rule out the adapter and the jack first, since they are the easiest fixes.

Heat is normal

The original adapter runs warm by design. Excessive heat, buzzing, or a burnt smell, however, means it should be retired immediately.
