Compatibility Notes
Several factors affect whether a given cartridge, mod, or accessory will work with your particular console. This table summarizes the main considerations.
| Factor | Consideration |
| Region | NTSC and PAL consoles differ in timing. A game built for one region may run at the wrong speed or refuse to boot on the other. |
| Lockout chip | Front-loaders use a lockout chip that can reject some cartridges, including certain reproductions, unless the chip is disabled or the game satisfies it. |
| Mapper support | Flash carts support a defined list of mappers. Obscure or custom mappers may not run even if the ROM is valid. |
| Expansion audio | Famicom expansion sound needs both a console mod and, on the N8 Pro, the EXP9-SND setting enabled to be heard. |
| AV mods | RGB, S-Video, and HDMI installs depend on console revision; identify your board before buying a kit. |
Reproductions and adapters
Reproduction cartridges vary in quality and lockout behavior. Famicom-to-NES adapters let you run Japanese cartridges, but expansion audio still requires the appropriate mod to be heard.
Identify before you buy
Knowing your console's region and board revision in advance saves money and frustration when choosing games, flash carts, and modification kits.
