Is My NES Compatible?
Almost any NES can be repaired and modded, but the model you own decides which projects are practical and how much work they take. Use the table below to see what each common console supports out of the box.
| Model | Flashcart | 72-pin repair | RGB / EXP audio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front-loader (NES-001) | Yes | Common need | NESRGB and EXP audio both feasible |
| Top-loader (NES-101) | Yes, excellent | Not applicable (different slot) | NESRGB possible; EXP audio needs extra wiring |
| Famicom | Yes, with 60-pin carts | Not applicable | RGB mods exist; native EXP audio support |
Reading the table
Every model accepts a flashcart, so a large game library is available to all. The 72-pin connector repair applies specifically to the front-loader, whose unique slot design is the source of the blinking-light problem. Top-loaders and Famicoms use different cartridge connectors and do not suffer that fault.
Mixing regions and formats
Want to play Japanese Famicom games on an NES, or NES carts on a Famicom? You will need a 72-to-60-pin adapter. See Regions and Famicom for details before buying.
