Recapping
Recapping involves desoldering and resoldering on the mainboard. Heat damage, lifted pads, or reversed polarity can destroy the console. This is an intermediate soldering task; practice on scrap boards first if you are new to it.
Recapping
Recapping is the replacement of a board's electrolytic capacitors with fresh equivalents. Over decades these capacitors can dry out or leak, causing subtle audio noise, unstable power, or video artifacts. The NES is less prone to catastrophic capacitor failure than some consoles, but a recap can still restore a tired unit.
- Inventory Identify every electrolytic capacitor and record its capacitance, voltage rating, and orientation. Buy quality replacements that meet or exceed those ratings.
- Removal Desolder the old capacitors one at a time, keeping heat brief to protect the pads and surrounding traces.
- Installation Fit each new capacitor with correct polarity, solder cleanly, and trim the leads.
- Verification Inspect under light for bridges or cold joints, then power on and confirm stable video, clean audio, and correct behavior.
Is it necessary?
Not every NES needs recapping. If your console works well, leave it alone. Recap when you see symptoms consistent with aging capacitors, or as preventive work on a unit you are already servicing.
Polarity matters
Electrolytic capacitors are polarized. Installing one backward can cause it to fail loudly. Double-check the marked stripe against the board outline before soldering.
