S-Video
Adding S-Video requires opening the console and soldering to the video circuitry. Take care around the PPU and verify pin assignments before powering on, as a wrong connection can produce no picture or stress a component.
S-Video Output
S-Video keeps the brightness (luma) and color (chroma) parts of the picture on separate wires instead of blending them into one signal as composite does. This separation removes much of the color crawl and dot interference seen on composite, giving a noticeably cleaner image on a display that supports it.
- Source the signals Identify the luma and chroma points on the mainboard or on an installed RGB board that already provides them.
- Buffering Where needed, add a small buffering or amplification circuit so the separated signals drive a cable cleanly without loss.
- Connector Mount an S-Video jack on the rear shell and wire luma, chroma, and ground to it.
- Verification Connect to an S-Video capable display and confirm sharp text and stable color compared with composite.
When it helps
S-Video is a worthwhile middle ground: clearly better than composite yet simpler than a full RGB chain. It is most useful on CRTs and scalers that accept an S-Video input.

If you install an NESRGB board, it can output clean S-Video as part of the same package, so you may get this improvement without a separate mod.
