SD card preparation
SD card preparation
Before your flashcart can load anything, the SD or microSD card needs to be formatted and organized correctly. A clean, well-structured card prevents most menu errors and slow loading.
Choosing a card
- A modest capacity is plenty; NES ROMs are tiny, so even a small card holds the entire library many times over.
- Use a reputable card from a trusted source. Counterfeit cards report false capacities and corrupt data.
- A standard everyday-speed card is fine. The N8 Pro does not require the fastest available media.
Formatting
- Format the card as FAT32. This is the file system the flashcart firmware expects.
- Use the standard allocation settings unless the firmware notes specify otherwise.
- Formatting erases everything, so back up any existing contents first.
Organizing files
Keep a tidy structure so the in-game menu stays fast and readable:
- Place the firmware files at the locations the firmware package specifies.
- Group ROMs into folders by genre, publisher, or alphabet to make browsing easier.
- Avoid burying files many folders deep, which slows menu navigation.
Use only games you legally own. Dump ROMs from your own cartridges. This guide does not provide or endorse downloading copyrighted ROMs you do not own.
With the card formatted and your folders in place, continue to flashcart setup to install the firmware and configure the menu.
