Dirty cartridge
Do not use your breath to clean a cartridge. The moisture promotes corrosion. Power the console off before inserting or removing games to avoid stressing the contacts.
Dirty Cartridge
A dirty cartridge is behind a large share of NES problems, from games that refuse to boot to graphical glitches and freezes mid-play. The edge contacts collect oxidation, dust, and oils that interrupt the data the console needs to read.
- Inspect Look at the gold contacts under good light. Discoloration, tarnish, or visible grime confirms the diagnosis.
- Clean with alcohol Use a cotton swab and high-purity isopropyl alcohol to wipe both rows of contacts until swabs come away clean.
- Treat heavy tarnish For stubborn oxidation, lightly pass a soft eraser over the contacts, then wipe again with alcohol to clear residue.
- Dry and test Allow the contacts to dry completely, then boot the game.
Symptoms of a dirty cart
Beyond a blank or gray screen, a dirty cartridge can cause scrambled graphics, the wrong colors, sudden freezes, or a game that works only when you press it at a certain angle. All of these point to an intermittent contact.
Clean, don't scrape
Avoid metal tools and abrasive pads. They scratch the thin gold plating and leave the contacts more prone to corrosion than before.
