Cleaning and Care

Regular cleaning is the simplest way to extend the life of an Xbox 360. Dust is the enemy: it insulates components, chokes airflow, and pushes temperatures toward the range that causes RROD on phat consoles.

Routine cleaning

  • Blow dust out of the vents with compressed air every few months.
  • Wipe the outer shell with a dry or barely damp lint-free cloth.
  • Keep the console horizontal or vertical but stable; a knocked-over unit can scratch a disc mid-spin.

Deeper cleaning

  1. Open the case and clear dust from the fan blades, duct, and heatsink fins.
  2. Clean the DVD laser lens gently with isopropyl alcohol on a swab.
  3. If you are already inside, consider refreshing the thermal paste.

Placement matters

Give the console open space on all sides. Enclosed shelves and cabinets trap heat, and trapped heat is what kills these machines over time.

Good habits

  • Power down fully rather than leaving it idling hot for hours.
  • Keep liquids and pets' fur away from the vents.
  • Handle discs by the edges to avoid forcing the laser to work harder.
