XBLA & Arcade
Beyond full retail games, the Xbox 360 has a rich catalog of smaller downloadable titles known as XBLA, short for Xbox Live Arcade. These arcade-style games range from classic remakes to original indie hits, and a modified console can run the ones you legally own from your own storage.
What Makes Them Different
- Smaller in size than full disc games, so many fit comfortably on a drive.
- Quick to launch and easy to browse from a homebrew dashboard.
- Varied library covering puzzle, action, retro, and indie genres.
Running Them
Arcade titles are stored alongside your other content on the internal hard drive or an external USB drive. Your homebrew dashboard, such as Aurora or FreeStyle Dash, scans for them and displays them with cover art just like full games. Because they are compact, building a large arcade collection takes far less space than the same number of retail titles.
Only use XBLA and arcade content you have legally purchased or are otherwise entitled to. Respect licensing and avoid pirated downloads.
For many users, XBLA games are a highlight of the platform, offering bite-sized, replayable experiences that are perfect for the living room. With a tidy folder structure, they slot neatly into your library next to everything else you launch from the dashboard.
