Fan & cooling
Unplug the console before working inside it, and reconnect the fan header before testing. Running the board with the fan disconnected will overheat the processors quickly.
Fan and Cooling Maintenance
Cooling is the heart of keeping a phat Xbox 360 alive. The original airflow was marginal, so dust and tired fans push temperatures into the range that cracks BGA solder and triggers RROD.
- Inspect. Open the console and look at the dual fan unit and the heatsink fins. A clogged heatsink chokes airflow even with healthy fans.
- Clean. Clear dust from the fan blades, the duct, and the fins using compressed air. Hold the blades still so the air does not spin them.
- Test the fans. Listen for grinding or rattling. A bearing that has gone noisy will eventually stop and should be replaced.
- Improve airflow. Make sure the plastic shroud routes air across both heatsinks, and keep the console in open space, never enclosed.
Ways to run cooler
- Pair fan cleaning with fresh thermal paste for the biggest temperature drop.
- Some owners fit larger or higher-flow heatsinks on chronically hot units.
- Give the console breathing room; do not stack items on top of it.
