Game won't load

Before blaming the disc or game, make sure the console is not overheating. A unit on the edge of RROD can fail to load games as an early warning sign.

Troubleshooting: Game Won't Load

A game that refuses to start can stem from the disc, the optical drive, the storage, or the console itself. Isolate the layer that is failing.

  1. Inspect the disc. Check for scratches, smudges, and fingerprints, then clean it gently from center to edge. Scratched discs are the most common cause.
  2. Test the drive. Try several known-good discs. If none read, the laser may be dirty or worn, which is a DVD drive problem, not a game problem.
  3. Check storage. For installed or downloaded titles, a failing or full hard drive can stop a game from launching. Free space or test another drive.
  4. Watch temperatures. If load failures coincide with the console running hot, address cooling before anything else.

By symptom

  • One disc fails, others work: the disc is scratched or dirty.
  • All discs fail: suspect the laser or the DVD drive.
  • Installed games fail: check the hard drive health and free space.
  • Random crashes during play often signal an overheating console.
