Compatibility Notes
Not every repair or upgrade applies to every Xbox 360. The original "phat" consoles, the later Slim, and the final E model differ in cooling, drives, and how prone they are to the classic RROD.
| Topic | Phat (original) | Slim / E |
|---|---|---|
| RROD risk | High; BGA solder fails from heat | Much lower; redesigned cooling |
| Reflow / reball | Common repair path | Rarely needed |
| Thermal paste refresh | Strongly recommended | Helpful on aging units |
| 2.5-inch HDD bay | Removable caddy | Different caddy and format |
| DVD drive pairing | Firmware-locked | Firmware-locked |
Before you start
- Confirm your exact model and motherboard revision; steps and parts vary between them.
- Caddies and formatting differ across generations, so a drive prepared for one may not drop into another.
- The DVD drive is paired by firmware on every generation, so a plain swap will not read discs.
Identify first
Knowing whether you hold a phat, Slim, or E unit decides which guides on this wiki actually apply to your console.
