Compatibility Notes

Not every repair or upgrade applies to every Xbox 360. The original "phat" consoles, the later Slim, and the final E model differ in cooling, drives, and how prone they are to the classic RROD.

Before you start

  • Confirm your exact model and motherboard revision; steps and parts vary between them.
  • Caddies and formatting differ across generations, so a drive prepared for one may not drop into another.
  • The DVD drive is paired by firmware on every generation, so a plain swap will not read discs.

Identify first

Knowing whether you hold a phat, Slim, or E unit decides which guides on this wiki actually apply to your console.
