Tools and Software

Most Xbox 360 maintenance needs only modest hardware tools. Board-level RROD repairs add specialist equipment. Names below are given in plain text so you can search for the current versions yourself.

Basic hand tools

  • Torx and Phillips screwdrivers, including a security Torx bit for controllers and some shells.
  • Plastic pry tools to open cases without scratching or cracking the shell.
  • Isopropyl alcohol and lint-free cloths or swabs for cleaning paste and laser lenses.
  • Compressed air for clearing dust from fans and heatsinks.

Repair and cooling supplies

  • Thermal paste, a quality non-conductive compound.
  • Replacement fans, heatsinks, and X-clamp or screw kits.
  • Replacement DVD drive belts and analog stick modules for controllers.

Advanced board work

  • Hot-air rework station or reflow oven for reflow and reball.
  • Reball stencils and solder spheres for permanent BGA repairs.
  • Flux and a temperature probe to follow a safe heating profile.

Software and references

  • A secondary error code lookup to interpret RROD subcodes.
  • For modded consoles, the XeLL loader output is your diagnostic readout.
