FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do early Xbox 360s get the Red Ring of Death?
On phat consoles the RROD comes from cracked BGA solder under the CPU or GPU. Heat from inadequate cooling stresses those joints until a connection breaks.
Is a reflow a permanent fix?
No. A reflow re-melts the existing solder and usually works only temporarily. A reball, which replaces the solder balls entirely, is the lasting repair.
Will new thermal paste fix my RROD?
Fresh paste alone will not reconnect a broken joint, but it is essential alongside a repair because it lowers temperatures and helps prevent the failure from returning.
Can I put any 2.5-inch drive in my console?
The bay takes a standard 2.5-inch SATA drive, including an SSD, but it must sit in the console-specific caddy and be formatted by the dashboard before use.
I swapped my DVD drive and now discs won't read. Why?
The drive is paired to the console by firmware. A plain swap without handling the firmware leaves discs unreadable.
My console powers on but the screen is black. Is it dead?
Often not. Check the cable, the input source, and the AV mode switch first. A black screen is frequently a display setting rather than a hardware failure.
Rule of thumb
If a phat 360 ran hot for years, assume heat is involved in whatever broke, and fix the cooling as part of any repair.
