Before You Begin

A little preparation makes the difference between a smooth project and a frustrating one. Read this page fully before touching a screwdriver or ordering parts.

Know your model

The single most important step is identifying whether you own a DMG, MGB, or CGB. Screen kits and replacement shells are cut for one model only, and a mismatched kit simply will not fit. Confirm your model before buying anything.

Set up a clean workspace

Work on a well-lit, uncluttered surface. The tiny screws and ribbon connectors are easy to lose, so use a small dish or magnetic tray. Avoid carpet, which swallows dropped parts and builds static.

Back up your saves first

If you are switching to a flashcart or opening a cart, copy any existing save data you care about. Battery-backed saves can be lost during handling, and there is no undo.

Match the task to your skill

Flashcart projects need no tools and no soldering. Screen mods require opening the shell and handling delicate ribbon cables, and DMG IPS installs also require trimming plastic. Be honest about your comfort level and start simple.

Take your time

There is no rush. Lay out parts, read each step before doing it, and keep your old components until the mod is confirmed working. A careful first attempt beats a hurried redo.
