What You Can Do
Modding a Game Boy ranges from simple plug-and-play upgrades to involved hardware surgery. Here is the spread of projects this wiki covers, roughly from easiest to most advanced.
Play games from a flashcart
A flashcart is a reusable cartridge that loads ROM files from an SD card. Drop your legally owned game backups onto the card, insert the cart, and pick a title from a menu. The EverDrive-GB X7 even adds a real-time clock for games that track time, while the EZ-Flash Junior offers a budget-friendly alternative.
Upgrade the screen
The original displays are dim and reflective. Modern IPS kits such as the FunnyPlaying Q5 give a bright, crisp, backlit picture. Backlight kits are a lighter-touch option, and the bivert mod sharpens contrast and ghosting on the DMG.
Improve sound and controls
Many builders add a cleaner audio amplifier, swap worn buttons and silicone pads, and replace tired speakers while the shell is already open.
Mix and match
These projects layer nicely. A common build combines an IPS screen, fresh buttons, and a flashcart for an all-in-one modern handheld that still plays original carts.
Pick what excites you, but read the compatibility and safety notes first, since most kits are model specific.
