Save management

Save Management

Flashcarts store your progress as save files on the SD card. Managing those files well means you never lose a hard-won playthrough. Here is how saving works and how to protect it.

How saves are stored

When a game writes progress, the flashcart records a save file alongside the game on the card. The EverDrive-GB X7 and EZ-Flash Junior both handle this automatically, so in-game saving behaves much like it did on original carts, only now the data lives on the SD card.

Real-time clock note

Games that use a real-time clock rely on the cart keeping time. The EverDrive-GB X7's RTC supports this, so date-based events continue working between sessions.

Backing up saves

  1. Power off, remove the card, and insert it into your computer.
  2. Copy the save files to a folder on your computer.
  3. Repeat periodically, especially before reformatting the card or updating firmware.

Save states versus in-game saves

An in-game save uses the game's own save feature. A save state captures the exact moment of play and is offered by the X7 on supported titles. Save states are convenient but tied to the flashcart, so for long-term safety rely on in-game saves you can back up.

Avoiding corruption

Always safely eject the card and never remove it while the console is writing. Most lost saves trace back to a card pulled mid-write.
