Choosing a method

Choosing a Method

With several mods available, it helps to think about your goal first, then pick the path that gets you there with the least fuss. Here is how to decide.

If you just want to play games

Go straight to a flashcart. It needs no tools, no soldering, and no shell opening. Choose the EverDrive-GB X7 for the broadest feature set including real-time clock support, or the EZ-Flash Junior if you want a lower-cost option. Either one drops games onto an SD card and plays them from a menu.

If the screen is too dim

You have three levels of effort. A bivert mod is the lightest touch on a DMG, improving contrast without adding light. A backlight kit illuminates the original screen. A full IPS kit like the FunnyPlaying Q5 replaces the panel entirely for the best image, but it is the most involved install.

You can do both

A flashcart and a screen mod are independent. Many builders install an IPS panel and run a flashcart together for a fully modernized handheld.

Weigh effort against payoff

Flashcarts deliver instant value for zero risk. Screen mods deliver a dramatic visual upgrade but require opening the console. On the DMG, an IPS kit also means trimming the shell, which is permanent. Match the method to how far you want to go.
