FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Game Boy is best for chiptune?
The original DMG is the classic choice for its larger screen and bassier amplifier, but the Pocket and Color work equally well as LSDj sequencers. Any of them benefits enormously from a prosound mod for clean recording.
Will Game Boy Color games run on my DMG?
Only dual-mode and DMG-compatible titles run on the original DMG and Pocket. Games marked GBC-only require a Game Boy Color or later hardware.
Why does my old game keep losing its save?
Most cartridges from that era use battery-backed SRAM, and after decades the internal coin cell has died. Replacing it restores save retention. See the saves troubleshooting page.
Is emulation or downloading ROMs legal?
Emulation itself is legal, and homebrew and your own legal backups are fine. Downloading commercial ROMs you do not own is copyright infringement, which this wiki does not cover.
My screen has vertical lines, is it dead?
Not necessarily. Lines come from a failing screen ribbon bond and can sometimes be revived by carefully reheating it, though an IPS replacement is the permanent fix.
Do I need to recap my Game Boy?
Only if you have audio distortion or instability that cleaning and a new speaker do not cure. A clear, stable console does not need recapping.
Still stuck?
Work through the relevant troubleshooting page step by step, and clean every contact before assuming hardware failure. Dirty contacts cause more "broken" Game Boys than anything else.
