Methods Overview
This wiki covers two broad families of mods: flashcarts for loading games, and screen mods for improving the display. Here is how they compare so you can pick a starting point.
Flashcarts
A flashcart is the easiest entry into modding. It needs no tools and no shell opening; you simply load ROM files onto an SD card and select games from a menu. The EverDrive-GB X7 leads on features including a real-time clock, while the EZ-Flash Junior is the budget pick. Both work across the DMG, Pocket, and Color.
Screen mods
Screen mods range from light to involved. A bivert improves DMG contrast with minimal parts. A backlight kit adds light to the original panel. A full IPS kit like the FunnyPlaying Q5 replaces the panel for the brightest, sharpest result, and on the DMG it requires shell trimming.
| Method | Tools needed | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Flashcart | None | Very easy |
| Bivert | Screwdriver | Moderate |
| Backlight kit | Screwdriver | Moderate |
| IPS kit | Screwdriver, knife (DMG) | Advanced |
Start where you are comfortable
Most people begin with a flashcart, then tackle a screen mod once they have handled the console a few times.
