Super Game Boy

Super Game Boy

The SGB is the odd one out. Rather than a handheld, the Super Game Boy is a cartridge-shaped adapter that slots into a Super Nintendo. You insert a Game Boy game into the top of the adapter, and it plays on your television through the SNES.

How it fits the family

Because it has no screen of its own, the usual screen mods do not apply. There is no IPS panel, backlight, or bivert to install; the image comes from your TV. What it offers instead is a big-screen way to enjoy the same library.

Flashcarts and the SGB

You can place a flashcart like the EverDrive-GB X7 or EZ-Flash Junior into the Super Game Boy and load games from the SD card, then play them on the SNES. This makes the adapter a convenient way to browse a whole collection on the big screen.

Special borders and palettes

The Super Game Boy adds custom screen borders and color palettes to many monochrome games. Certain titles were enhanced specifically for it, displaying richer colors and decorative frames that the handhelds cannot show.

Good to know

A later revision improved timing accuracy for music and gameplay. If you collect for the SNES, the Super Game Boy is a charming and low-effort way to revisit Game Boy classics without modding a handheld at all.
