DMG (original)

DMG (Original Game Boy)

The DMG is the 1989 original, the chunky gray handheld that defined portable gaming. It is the largest of the family and, thanks to that roomy shell, one of the most rewarding to mod, though it asks a little more effort for screen upgrades.

What it supports

  • Flashcarts work perfectly. Both the EverDrive-GB X7 and EZ-Flash Junior slot in like any cartridge.
  • IPS screen kits such as the FunnyPlaying Q5 fit, but the DMG requires shell trimming because the modern panel is larger than the original window.
  • Backlight kits add illumination to the stock screen without trimming.
  • Bivert mod is a DMG favorite, sharpening contrast and cutting ghosting on the reflective display.

Installing an IPS panel in a DMG means permanently cutting plastic from the front shell. Once trimmed, it cannot be restored. Measure and test fit repeatedly before removing material.

Why people love modding it

The DMG's size means generous internal space for cables, batteries, and add-ons, and its iconic look makes a finished build feel special. The bivert mod is unique to this dim, non-backlit screen and pairs beautifully with a backlight.

Tooling note

You will need a tri-wing screwdriver for the case and a cutting tool for IPS installs. See the screen mod pages for the full process.
