Screen Mods Overview

The original Game Boy displays are famously dim and reflective. Screen mods fix that, and they come in several levels of effort and result. This page helps you understand the options before you commit.

The three approaches

  • Bivert mod — the lightest touch, available on the DMG. It inverts the display signal to boost contrast and reduce ghosting. It adds no light but sharpens the image.
  • Backlight kit — adds illumination behind the original screen so you can play in dim rooms. A moderate install that keeps the stock panel.
  • IPS kit — replaces the panel entirely with a modern display like the FunnyPlaying Q5. The brightest, sharpest result, and the most involved install.

All screen mods require opening the console and handling delicate ribbon cables. On the DMG, an IPS kit also demands permanent shell trimming. Read the safety page and the specific install guide before starting.

Choosing a path

If you want maximum image quality and are comfortable with a careful install, go IPS. If you want light without replacing the panel, choose a backlight. If you have a DMG and want a quick contrast boost, the bivert is a great entry point and pairs well with a backlight.

Model-specific kits

IPS and backlight kits are made for one model. Always match the kit to your DMG, Pocket, or Color.
