Color (CGB)
Color (CGB)
The CGB, or Game Boy Color, brought a color display and a faster processor to the family in 1998. It plays the entire library of older monochrome games plus color titles built for it, making it a versatile base for a modern build.
What it supports
- Flashcarts are fully supported. Both the EverDrive-GB X7 and EZ-Flash Junior run color and classic games alike.
- IPS screen kits come in a model-specific Color version that dramatically improves brightness, color accuracy, and viewing angles over the original reflective panel.
- Backlight behavior varies; the stock Color screen is already somewhat lit compared to the DMG, so an IPS swap is usually the bigger upgrade.
- Bivert does not apply to the Color's display.
The IPS sweet spot
Because the original Color screen is reflective and washed out in many lighting conditions, a Color IPS kit is one of the most transformative mods in the whole family. Games suddenly look vibrant and clear.
Good to know
The Color shipped in many translucent shells, and replacement housings are widely available if you want a fresh look alongside a new screen. Always match the IPS kit to the CGB model code, since Pocket and DMG kits will not fit the Color's distinct shell and panel mounting.
