Glossary

Modding has its own vocabulary. Here are the terms you will meet most often across this wiki.

Models and hardware

  • DMG — the original 1989 Game Boy, the large gray brick with a green-tinted screen.
  • MGB — the Game Boy Pocket, a slimmer redesign that runs on two AAA batteries.
  • CGB — the Game Boy Color, which added a color display and a faster processor.
  • SGB — the Super Game Boy, a cartridge adapter that plays Game Boy games on an SNES.

Mods and parts

  • Flashcart — a reusable cartridge that loads ROM files from an SD card.
  • RTC — real-time clock; a battery-backed timekeeper some games use, supported by the EverDrive-GB X7.
  • IPS panel — a modern LCD with wide viewing angles and an even backlight.
  • Backlight kit — a panel that adds illumination behind the original screen.
  • Bivert — a mod that inverts the display signal to sharpen contrast and reduce ghosting on the DMG.

Process terms

  • ROM — a game image file stored on the SD card.
  • Save file — your in-game progress, written to the SD card by the flashcart.
  • Shell trim — removing plastic ribs so a larger panel fits, required for DMG IPS installs.
