Pocket (MGB)

Pocket (MGB)

The MGB, sold as the Game Boy Pocket, slimmed the original down to a far more portable size and swapped the green-tinted display for a sharper black-and-white screen. It runs on two AAA batteries and remains a favorite for its clean looks.

What it supports

  • Flashcarts work without issue. The EverDrive-GB X7 and EZ-Flash Junior both play original and backed-up games.
  • IPS screen kits are available in a model-specific Pocket version. Do not try to use a DMG kit; the panel and mounting are sized differently.
  • Backlight kits brighten the stock screen for low-light play.
  • Bivert is of limited benefit here, since the Pocket's screen already has better contrast than the DMG.

Tighter quarters

The Pocket's slim shell leaves less internal room than the DMG, so cable routing during a screen mod takes a bit more care. The upside is no shell trimming is needed when using a kit made for the Pocket.

Good to know

Early Pockets shipped without a power LED, which was added in a later revision. This does not affect modding, but it can help you spot the exact unit you have. As always, confirm the MGB model code before ordering a screen kit so everything fits the first time.
