SD card preparation

SD Card Preparation

A flashcart is only as reliable as the SD card behind it. Preparing the card correctly up front prevents the most common flashcart headaches, like games not appearing or saves failing to write.

Choose and format the card

A microSD card of modest capacity holds the entire Game Boy library comfortably; you do not need a large card. Format it as FAT32, which both the EverDrive-GB X7 and EZ-Flash Junior expect. Most cards arrive formatted correctly, but reformatting on your computer guarantees a clean start.

Back up before formatting

Formatting erases everything on the card. If you are reusing a card, copy off anything you want to keep first, including any existing save files.

Organize your files

  • Place your legally owned ROM backups in the folder your flashcart expects, following its menu structure.
  • Keep filenames clear so the menu is easy to browse.
  • Avoid cluttering the root of the card with stray files.

Eject safely

Always use your operating system's safe-eject before pulling the card. Removing it mid-write can corrupt files and, worse, damage save data already on the card.

Test before a big copy

Load a handful of games first and confirm they boot. Once you know the card and folder layout work, copy the rest of your collection with confidence.
