Cleaning

Cleaning and Care

Disconnect power before opening anything. Avoid water and household cleaners on electronics, and never use abrasive pads on contacts, which strip protective plating.

Routine cleaning keeps a Nintendo 64 and its games running reliably. Most "broken" consoles simply suffer from dust and oxidation, both of which are easy to address with the right supplies and a little patience.

  1. Gather supplies. High-purity isopropyl alcohol, lint-free swabs and cloths, a soft brush, compressed air, and the security bit needed to open the shell.
  2. Clean the exterior. Wipe the shell with a barely damp cloth, then dry it. Brush dust from vents and the cartridge slot opening.
  3. Service the contacts. Clean cartridge edges and the console's slot pins with alcohol on a swab, as covered on the connector page.
  4. Address the interior. With the shell open, blow dust off the board and check that nothing is corroded or loose before closing it up.

Caring for controllers

Grit works into the analog stick bowl over time, accelerating wear. When a controller is open for any reason, clear out debris and wipe the mechanism so the stick moves smoothly.

Storage

Keep cartridges in a dry place away from humidity, which drives the oxidation that causes read failures. Dust covers and a stable, cool environment go a long way toward preventing problems. maintenance
