Expansion Pak

Expansion Pak

The Expansion Pak is a RAM upgrade that doubles the console's main memory from 4MB to 8MB. It installs in the small compartment under the lid on the top of the console, replacing the Jumper Pak that ships there by default.

Why it matters

Some games require the Expansion Pak and will not boot without it, while others use it optionally for higher resolutions or extra detail. A handful of well-known titles simply will not run on a stock 4MB console.

Jumper Pak (default)4MBMost games run; some refuse to boot

Installing it

  • Power off the console and open the lid on top.
  • Use the removal tool (or careful fingers) to lift out the existing Jumper Pak.
  • Seat the Expansion Pak firmly until level, then close the lid.

Region note

The Expansion Pak is not region-specific. A unit from any region works in any console, so an import Pak is a fine, often cheaper, option.

Keep the Jumper Pak you remove; some setups expect one present when no Expansion Pak is used. memory
